Collabit, Indonesia’s first marine biotech, transforms marine by-products into high-value ingredients, aiming for 100% fish utilization. Using biotech and circular economy principles, they turn fish waste into food, feed, and fertilizer. Initially focused on tuna, they produce collagen and have secured $230,000 from investors and a $150,000 contract. Their loan will fund inventory, operations, and products to tackle Indonesia’s annual 750,000 tonnes of fish waste.

Indonesia, a leading fish producer and the world’s largest tuna exporter, suffers from poor fisheries management. The country discards up to 50% of its fish by-products, approximately 3 million tonnes of nutritional value are lost annually.
Marine waste disposal increases operational costs, pushing fishing companies to overfish, thus endangering marine ecosystems. Furthermore most of the by-products are dumped into landfills or oceans, leading to environmental issues like methane emissions and ocean acidification.
Collabit is revolutionising the fishing industry with a circular economy approach, transforming marine by-products into valuable ingredients.
Collabit’s mission is to combat fish waste and close nutrition gaps while positioning Indonesia as a hub for marine biotech manufacturing. Through dedicated R&D, Collabit innovates marine ingredient extraction, turning waste into profitable end-user products including collagen, fish peptides, fish oil and more.
Presently, marine waste is transformed only into low-value dry fishmeal for animal feed. . Traditional processing methods involve large centralised facilities that are energy-intensive and demand extensive warehouse space, requiring huge supplies of marine waste. However, such facilities are impractical for remote islands and cities in Indonesia, due to infrastructural limitations and the fragmented availability of marine waste.
Build factory to produce collagen:
Marine Ingredients Pipelines:
This approach not only addresses the widespread nutritional deficiencies prevalent in many communities but also enhances the economic value of marine resources. This transformation benefits local communities by boosting agricultural yields and improving animal health, thereby contributing to sustainable economic growth.
1. Short-term, is the commercialisation and increasing value creation from fish processors and fishermen. Collabit is building a marine ingredient facility now to be able to produce 12 tonnes of Collagen annually and next year their first prototype of FishPresso can produce 150 tonnes of fish peptides.
Medium-term, they can scale the production of marine collagen, fish peptides and in future fish oil for stunting and produce the marine ingredients to be available locally. Make FishPresso available to be Pre-ordered – so they can empower local communities that have the fish waste.
Unlike traditional marine ingredients, Collabit sources its raw material from sustainably managed tuna fisheries in Indonesia that implement Fishery Improvement Projects (FIP) that are working towards Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. They firmly believe in harnessing the ocean’s resources responsibly, ensuring a healthy planet for the future generations.
Long-term impacts, implement sustainable sourcing policy to fish waste, that can result in a cleaner Ocean. The FishPresso will empower coastal communities and strive for 100% fish utilisation by making the machines available at fishing ports, fish processors, aquaculture farms site and coastal villages.
2. Small scale extraction and lab testing has been done comparing the result to the research publications.
A. Collabit ‘s marine collagen is pure hydrolyzed collagen powder containing 18 important amino acids for our bodies. Collagen is one of the main structural proteins and is very important to maintain skin elasticity, ligament joint strength and bone density. The Collabit controlled and specific enzymatic process produces collagen tri-peptides below 1000 DA molecular size to ensure the maximal absorption by your body.
B1. Collabit’s Fish Peptide is rich in macro and micro-nutrients, and its pre-digested proteins with low molecular weight ensures optimal absorption in the intestine, resulting in improved nutrient uptake. The resulting hydrolysed product contains bioactive peptides which possess various natural bioactivities and properties, such as immunomodulatory, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects, improving the general aquaculture health and survival.
B2. Collabit’s Fish Peptide Hydrolysate is a potent natural soil biostimulant, improving the nutrient content in soil and stimulating the soil biology from bacteria and fungi to earthworms, ultimately promoting plant health and optimal growth. The resulting hydrolysed product is rich in essential macro and micronutrients needed for plant growth. It is completely organic and more environmentally friendly than synthetic chemical fertilisers.
C. Collabit’s Fishpresso, a mobile and modular marine by-product processing solution, addresses numerous obstacles including:
Its mobility enhances productivity, enabling deployment as required. The resulting fish peptides and protein products can enhance local agriculture and animal farming or be distributed to nearby communities, thereby amplifying value, profitability, and economic empowerment.
The activities funded by this loan are helping to achieve the above Sustainable Development Goals as defined by the UN.
Indonesia being one of the largest maritime countries is still having a huge challenge in nutrition gaps like stunting. Collabit would like to use Marine Nutrition Partnership initiatives, to build partnership between the fishing stakeholders to capture the underutilised marine by-products, so they will not end up in the landfill or Ocean as waste. Collabit’s innovative approach can be applied across fish processors, fishing ports, coastal fishing villages. By bringing the solutions to where the amount of marine waste is the highest, can result in value creation of nutritious marine ingredients, making marine nutrition available and augmenting not only profitability, productivity for fishing stakeholders but also making marine nutrition available to local communities that need it the most.
